1947-10-20 Rinty Monaghan w pts 15 Dado Marino, The Arena, Harringay, London, England - NBA. Referee: Teddy Waltham. Supported by the BBBoC, NBA and generally accepted throughout the world, this match was announced to decide the championship left absent after Jackie Paterson had been stripped of his belts. Although it went ahead as such, due to Paterson gaining an injunction in the High Court in the days leading up to the contest the BBBoC were forced to reinstate him as the champion.

Reported as an affair that fell a long way short of what one expects from a contest involving a world title, although Monaghan (112) took a count of seven in the 11th round he controlled the action from the periphery, dancing around Marino (111) scoring with the left jab. Marino really did not deserve much better, waiting to counter rather than forcing the fight. Thus, on receiving the referee’s decision, Monaghan was officially recognised in America as being the champion, while lacking the same recognition in Britain.
