1949-12-06 Sandy Saddler w pts 10 Orlando Zulueta, The Arena, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - NBA. Referee: Vito Mazzeo. Scorecards: 5-4, 5-4, 4-5. Supported by the Cleveland Boxing Commission, the weight class was re-introduced by the NBA when Saddler was matched to fight Zulueta. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a boring affair due to a clash of styles, with Saddler (127½) trailing during the opening four rounds to the fast-moving Zulueta (129½). Saddler eventually picked up steam in the fifth to stay just about in front for the rest of the contest. One judge had the Cuban ahead having deducted points after two left-hand punches from Saddler had strayed low during the second session, while the other two gave it to the latter.

A few weeks later, Saddler (129) beat Chuck Burton (126½) by a first-round kayo at the Valley Arena, Holyoake, Massachusetts on 6 February 1950. Although there was some risk to Saddler’s credibility at the weight, this contest was seen as a featherweight non-title ten rounder and not an authorised 130lb defence.
