1950-01-16 Willie Pep w co 5 (15) Charley Riley, Kiel Auditorium, St Louis, Missouri, USA - WORLD. Referee: Harry Kessler. In electing to box instead of moving in and looking for openings for power-packed rights, his normal style of fighting, Riley (125½) played right into the champion’s hands. Staying on the outside and dancing around his man, Pep (123½) merely bided his time and always looked to have plenty in hand. In the fifth, dispensing with what had gone before, Pep spotted an opening and unleashed a terrific right uppercut followed by a left hook and Riley went down to be counted out after 1.05 of the round had elapsed.
Following this one, it was reported that Gilbert Benaim, the French promoter, had made Pep an offer he could not refuse for a defence against the European champion, Ray Famechon, sometime during March in Paris. Although this approach came to nothing the Frenchman was soon on his way to America to meet Pep, having cleaned up Europe with victories over Gino Bondavilli, Joseph Preys, Ronnie Clayton, Al Phillips, Kid Dussart, Giuseppe Fusaro, Jean Machterlinck, Alvaro Cerasani, Luigi Male and Canada's Danny Webb.
