1952-06-05 Jersey Joe Walcott w pts 15 Ezzard Charles, Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - WORLD. Referee: Zack Clayton. Scorecards: 9-6, 8-7, 8-7. Making his first defence against the man he won the title from, Walcott (196) dominated the early stages of his fight against Charles (191½), using solid lefts and rights to keep the challenger at arm's length, and hurt him with a right to the jaw in the third. In the early stages Charles concentrated on the body, but it was not until the latter stages that Walcott began to slow down and to come under heavy pressure. Cut over both eyes, Charles gave it everything he had over the last four rounds, hurting Walcott several times in the 14th before he ran out of time. There were no knockdowns and, at the age of 38, Walcott became the oldest man to successfully defend the world heavyweight title.
On 28 July at the Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NYC, New York, Rocky Marciano earned the right to be Walcott’s next opponent when he knocked out Harry Matthews in the second session of their 15-round eliminator. Although unbeaten in 42 contests, the power-punching 28-year old Marciano was still seen as wild-swinging and somewhat clumsy opponent for the skilful veteran.
