In one of boxing’s greatest shocks, Australia gained her first fully recognised world champion when Carruthers (116) knocked out Toweel (117¼) inside 139 seconds. Knowing that the champion was having problems making the weight, the southpaw Carruthers tore into Toweel from the off and put him down with a tremendous left hook. Somehow managing to rise, Toweel was subjected to a barrage of blows to head and body before sinking to the boards to be counted out.
