1952-12-17 Archie Moore w pts 15 Joey Maxim, The Arena, St Louis, Missouri, USA - WORLD. Referee: Harry Kessler. Scorecards: 76-74, 82-58, 87-63. The number-one challenger for several years, Moore (172½) finally got his opportunity and took it with both hands when outscoring the champion by a wide margin. Although the referee’s scorecard was much closer than those of the two judges, apart from the opening six rounds when he was well in the fight, Maxim (174½) ran second best from thereon. It was the body punishment dished out by Moore, especially in the second and tenth rounds that won the fight for him. While there were no knockdowns, Maxim was forced to take plenty of punishment and several times he was on the verge of going down. At the age of 39 and after 166 fights and almost 17 years in the ring, Moore had finally become the champion of all he surveyed.
