1953-03-21 Jimmy Carruthers w co 10 (15) Vic Toweel, Rand Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - WORLD. Referee: Willie Smith. The enforced return match again saw Toweel (117½) outclassed, only this time it took Carruthers (118) ten rounds to knock the challenger out. Once a bundle of energy, the weight-drained Toweel was unable to bother the Australian and after round six he was there for the taking, a heavy right-left-right combination eventually putting him down for the count at 0.21 of the tenth.
Despite talking of having a couple of non-title bouts before going home to defend, Carruthers surprisingly remained inactive.
Robert Cohen looked likely to be the champion’s first defence after outpointing the top-rated Pappy Gault prior to it being reported in August that Peter Keenan had been offered a title fight with Carruthers on 13 November in Sydney, Australia, if he could successfully defend his British and European titles against Belfast’s John Kelly on 3 October at the King’s Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Unfortunately for Keenan he was outpointed over 15 rounds by Kelly, who turned down the opportunity of taking his place. With Cohen asking for too much money, the promoters next turned their attention to Gault, even though he had recently lost the North American title to Billy Peacock, being outpointed over 12 rounds at the Eastern Parkway Arena, Brooklyn, NYC, New York on 17 August.
