1953-05-15 Rocky Marciano w co 1 (15) Jersey Joe Walcott, The Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA - WORLD. Referee: Frank Sikora. Concentrating on his defence, blocking and moving, Walcott (197¾) kept the champion at arm’s length for two thirds of the opening round and not a single blow landed. Then, as Marciano (184½) continued pressing forward he suddenly found a right to the jaw that sent Walcott crashing. The din was so intense that it was a good couple of seconds before Marciano realised that he had to go to a neutral corner, but it made no difference as Walcott was counted out on the 2.25 mark in the act of rising. It came as no surprise when Walcott, who had complained that the count was too quick, retired in the aftermath on the contest.
