1953-05-18 Yoshio Shirai w pts 15 Tanny Campo, Korakuen Stadium, Tokyo, Japan - WORLD. Referee: Kuniharu Hayashi. Scorecards: 148-142, 148-143, 148-142. Shirai (112), who picked up the unanimous decision from the judges, had to come from behind to retain his title after Campo (111¾) had continually forced the fight until the final three rounds. A light hitter, the challenger’s strategy was to attack the body before tying the champion up, while Shirai used his left to advantage whenever he could get any kind of space to manoeuvre.
