1953-06-24 Archie Moore w pts 15 Joey Maxim, Municipal Stadium, Ogden, Utah, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ray Miller. Scorecards: 7-6, 8-7, 8-5. Starting positively in what was a return match Maxim (175) was in front by the eighth round, jabbing and moving well, but from then on to the 13th the champion came back strongly. As Maxim tired from the body assaults he was forced to hang on as Moore (173¾) got himself back in the fight. Realising he needed to win the final two sessions Maxim hurt Moore with a couple of solid blows to the jaw, but it was the latter who stayed on to retain his title by a unanimous, if relatively narrow margin.
In the aftermath of Moore’s second victory over Maxim, the champion said he would be off to the Argentine to honour a couple of non-title commitments before thinking of his next defence. However, that did not stop Maxim’s manager, Jack Kearns, sitting down with Moore’s people to discuss a return.
At an NBA convention in September the Association turned down Kearns’ request that Maxim be named as the leading challenger on the grounds that they recognised Harold Johnson as the next man in line, providing that he met an obligation to box in Wisconsin, which he did on 7 November. Regardless of the edict, Moore would make another defence against Maxim.
