1954-01-27 Archie Moore w pts 15 Joey Maxim, Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida, USA - WORLD. Referee: Cy Gotttfried. Scorecards: 145-137, 148-135, 148-134. The third fight between the pair, saw the champion exert his authority over Maxim (174¼) when twice dropping him, for counts of ‘eight’ in the eighth and ‘seven’ in the 11th. This time round, despite having difficulty in making the weight, Moore (175) controlled the fight, wearing Maxim down with solid body blows and bringing up hooks and uppercuts for good measure. Despite having Maxim under the cosh on several occasions, Moore was unable to drop him again and had to be satisfied with a clear points victory. Maxim had given of his best, but it had not been enough.
With pressure being exerted on Moore to defend against the number-one challenger, Harold Johnson, by the NYSAC, NBA and World Boxing Commission, the bout was scheduled for some time in June, prior to it being switched to 11 August. A pro since 1946, Johnson had clocked up 51 fights, winning 46 of them, and in four meetings with Moore he had won once. Men he had beaten included Arturo Godoy, Henry Hall (three times), Jimmy Bivins, Bert Lytell, Chuck Hunter, Chubby Wright (twice), Clarence Henry, Leonard Morrow, Bob Satterfield, Nino Valdes, Jimmy Slade (twice), Ezzard Charles, Charley Doc Williams and Paul Andrews, all good fighters. When Johnson was knocked out inside three rounds by Jersey Joe Walcott in 1950, the latter created a bit of a record after stopping Harold’s father, Phil, also in three rounds, in 1936.
