1955-06-22 Archie Moore w co 3 (15) Carl Bobo Olson, Polo Grounds, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ruby Goldstein. Defending his title against the world middleweight champion, Moore (175) ultimately proved to be too powerful and too good for the naturally lighter man. The opening two rounds saw Olson (170¼) moving around Moore and stabbing out the left jab before banging away inside. But towards the end of the second, Moore had started to work the body and in the third he made his move. Although the session started quietly, with both men probing, on the 1.19 mark Olson had been counted out after taking a solid straight right to the face that was followed by two crunching left hooks to the jaw.
After the fight Moore took time out from the light heavies to make an unsuccessful challenge for Rocky Marciano’s heavyweight title on 21 September, losing by a ninth-round knock-out at the Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NYC, New York, before announcing that he would be defending his championship in Britain against Yolande Pompey on 13 March 1956. However, whether that was a ruse to keep the commissions off his back is unclear, but a number of excuses and a reluctance to make that date saw the fight eventually put back to June.
