1957-03-30 Pascual Perez w co 1 (15) Dai Dower, San Lorenzo Stadium, Buenos Aires, Argentina - WORLD. Referee: Alfonso Araujo. Knocked out inside two minutes and 48 seconds, Dower (111¼), who had no excuses, was shell-shocked after being put down flat on his back by a left-right to the jaw. The warning signs were there just moments earlier. Perez (107) had promised a quick start, fearing that if the challenger was allowed to settle he could be outpointed. There would be just two more fights for Dower following this shattering defeat.

Later that year two Argentinians, Urbieta Sosa (w co 3 on 2 August at the Industrial Pavilion, Santa Fe) and Pablo Sosa (w co 3 on 16 August at the Ramon Santamaria Club, Buenos Aires), weighed in at less than 112lbs for non-title contests against Perez. There would be just one more occasion that the champion allowed his non-title opponents to make less than the limit for the weight class.

Not before time, it was reported that Young Martin, the European champion, would finally get a crack at Perez at the end of October, but as in most of the champion’s defences the contracted date kept moving onwards for no apparent reason. First it was early November, then 30 November, and finally 7 December. The real reason, which eventually leaked out, confirmed that Perez was having difficulty with weight problems, inasmuch he was so light that he needed building up.
