1958-04-19 Pascual Perez w pts 15 Ramon Arias, New Circus Bullring, Caracas, Venezuela - WORLD. Referee: Ben McCullan. Scorecards: 141-139, 147-144, 147-139. Shocked by Arias (111) in the second round, Perez (107½) fought back to open a bad cut over his rival’s left eye in the fourth which turned the fight in his favour. Try as he might, the game challenger, who at the finish was half blinded by his own blood, was unable to find the punches to batter the champion from his crown, finishing weary but glorious in defeat.
Following this one it was reported that the pair could well meet again in August, and in October a Young Martin return was mentioned as being contracted, but neither projected defences amounted to anything. Whether the announcements were ploys to keep the authorities off Perez’s back, who knows, but following the Martin report, a week later Boxing News stated that Perez would be meeting Dommy Ursua, who had lost three of his last five contests, in Manila sometime in November. Belatedly, it was reported from Spain that Martin would not be fighting Perez in 1958 as the parties concerned could not agree the Spaniard’s purse. As in the majority of Perez’s championship defences the date was pushed forward.
