1958-12-15 [[Pascual Perez]] w pts 15 [[Dommy Ursua]], The Stadium, Manila, Philippines - WORLD. Referee: Frank Carter. Scorecards: 145-142, 146-142, 149-141. Although possessing a powerful left hook, Ursua (112) was never given the room to exploit it as the champion dictated the pace throughout to win handily. Showing no little skill, Perez (109¾) was content to keep his bull-like rival at bay using accurate lefts and rights with the Filipino unable to find an answer. Two records were broken for a flyweight fight in this one - 40,000 in attendance and Perez receiving a purse of £14,000.

1958-12-15 Pascual Perez w pts 15 Dommy Ursua, The Stadium, Manila, Philippines - WORLD. Referee: Frank Carter. Scorecards: 145-142, 146-142, 149-141. Although possessing a powerful left hook, Ursua (112) was never given the room to exploit it as the champion dictated the pace throughout to win handily. Showing no little skill, Perez (109¾) was content to keep his bull-like rival at bay with the use of accurate lefts and rights. Two records were broken for a flyweight fight in this one - 40,000 in attendance and Perez receiving a purse of £14,000.

Perez’s next two fights were non-title affairs, both in Tokyo, Japan in 1959, against Sadao Yaoita (l pts 10 at the Municipal Gym on 16 January) and Kenji Yonekura (w pts 10 at the Nihon University Amphitheatre on 18 February). The last bout saw Perez weigh in at 111¾lbs, his heaviest ever.

In mid-March it was reported that Perez would be meeting Yonekura again in Japan on 20 April, this time for the title. Once again there was a hitch over terms and conditions. The next date given was 6 June, which was then moved to 6 July before being settled at 10 August.
