1959-06-12 Carlos Ortiz w rtd 2 (12) Kenny Lane, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NBA/NY. Referee: Harry Kessler. With both men getting away fast, Ortiz (139¼) matching the southpaw jabs of Lane (140), there were a number of lively exchanges and it looked as though the fans were in for a treat. However, early in the second round, Ortiz dropped Lane for ‘four’ with a left-right combination and near the end of the session their heads came together, leaving the latter with a badly gashed right eye. It was clear that Lane could not continue with such a deep wound that would ultimately require ten stitches, and during the interval the fight was called off. Although Ortiz was also carrying a slight cut on his right eye, having been deemed fit to continue, he was announced the winner.

By the end of the year it was clear that, for whatever reason, the NYSAC had lost interest in the weight class and even Ortiz recognised that for him it was merely a stepping stone to the lightweight crown.
