1959-06-12 Carlos Ortiz w rtd 2 (12) Kenny Lane, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NBA/NY. Referee: Harry Kessler. With both men getting away fast, Ortiz (139¼) matching the southpaw jabs of Lane (140), there were a number of lively exchanges in the opening session. However, early in the second round Ortiz dropped Lane for ‘four’ with a left-right combination, and near the end of the session when their heads came together the latter was left with a badly gashed right eye. It was clear that Lane could not continue with such a deep wound that would ultimately require ten stitches, and during the interval the fight was called off. Although Ortiz was also carrying a slight cut on his right eye, having been deemed fit to continue he was announced the winner.

By the end of the year when it was clear that for whatever reason the NYSAC had lost interest in the weight class, even Ortiz recognised that it was merely a stepping stone to the lightweight crown.
