1959-12-04 Gene Fullmer w pts 15 Spider Webb, George Nelson Fieldhouse, Logan, Utah, USA - NBA. Referee: Ken Shulsen. Scorecards: 148-136, 150-132, 147-141. Pushing Webb (157¾) back in the first part of the fight worked well for the champion, who had his man in trouble in the third before slipping over in the fourth after being hit by a solid right cross. In the middle rounds, Webb began to slip Fullmer’s leads and made him look ungainly at times, but the latter came back strongly, especially in the ninth, scoring with heavy punches to the head. Several even rounds were followed by Webb forcing Fullmer (159¾) to backtrack in the 13th, but following an even 14th Fullmer staged a grandstand finish to make sure of the decision. Webb, who inflicted damage to both of Fullmer’s eyes, felt that the fight was much closer than the scores suggested and demanded a rematch.
