1960-11-18 Eder Jofre w co 6 (15) Eloy Sanchez, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - NBA. Referee: Mushy Callahan. Contesting the vacant title, Jofre (118) made a good start, selecting his punches well, and after picking up the pace floored the Mexican in the fifth with a right hook. On resuming, Sanchez (118) tore into Jofre like a madman, but in the next round he walked on to a succession of heavy rights hands, the last of which floored him for the full count on the 1.30 mark.

With Alphonse Halimi and Freddie Gilroy not interested in meeting Jofre, the fourth-rated Piero Rollo was selected as the next challenger. A former European champion, Rollo had been a pro since 1950 and had beaten Tino Cardinale, Amleto Falcinelli, Robert Meunier, Dante Bini, Jimmy Carson, Tanny Campo, Jose Luis Martinez, Eugene Lecozanet (twice), Mario D'Agata, Juan Cardenas, Federico Scarponi, Mario Sitri and Billy Rafferty. In 65 contests, of which he had won 53, Rollo had proved to be skilful, hard-punching and durable.
