1960-12-10 Benny Kid Paret w pts 15 Federico Thompson, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 9-6, 9-6, 7-6. Making his first defence, right from the opening bell Paret (147) forced the fight when setting up a relentless assault and although Thompson (145½), nine years older, tried to keep up he lacked the stamina to be able to trade non-stop with the champion throughout. Thompson tried to use his longer reach, but that also failed to affect the way the contest went as Paret constantly got inside and while there were no knockdowns, both men were occasionally rocked in various exchanges. The turning point came in the third round when Thompson’s mouth was badly gashed and he swallowed a large amount of blood from thereon, often choking on it and making it more difficult to up the pace. However, the Panamanian did manage a grandstand finish in the 15th when he pummelled away with a two-fisted attack for virtually three minutes but it was too late.
