1961-02-07 Harold Johnson w rsc 9 (15) Jesse Bowdry, Convention Hall, Miami, Florida, USA - NBA. Referee: Cy Gottfreid. Fighting for the vacant NBA title, Johnson (172) finally became a champion when stopping Bowdry (173) after 45 seconds of round nine after the latter’s corner threw the towel in and the referee concurred. Johnson, boxing in classical mode, had too much for the bobbing and weaving Bowdry, knocking him down for the first time in round six following a short right to the jaw. Having taken an ‘eight’ count, he weathered the seventh before being dropped again by a similar punch in the eighth. This time Bowdry was saved by the bell. Somehow making it for the start of the ninth, Bowdry was soon in trouble and took two more counts before being rescued.
