1961-03-04 Gene Fullmer w pts 15 Sugar Ray Robinson, Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - NBA. Referee: Frank Carter. Scorecards: 74-76, 74-67, 74-60. This would be the last time that Robinson (159¾) contested the title and following the fight he was being urged by all and sundry to retire gracefully before he became just another fighter. Having impressed in the first two rounds with classic left jabs, the third saw Robinson under constant attack as the champion came on like a train and the fighters even traded blows after the bell. That was the end of Robinson as a threat and although he was never floored he was forced to muster up all of his reserves as Fullmer (159¾) initiated attack after attack. When Robinson was cut over the left eye in the 11th it made life even more difficult for him but he gamely battled on to the final bell.
