1961-04-08 Davey Moore w co 1 (15) Danny Valdez, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: George Latka. Defending his title against the inexperienced Valdez turned out to be one of the champion’s least difficult fights to date, evidenced when he dropped the 21-year-old local with a right to the jaw midway through the first. This was the first time Valdez (125½) had been floored in 22 contests and it was not to be the last. After clambering up at ‘seven’ still dazed, an overarm right to the jaw from Moore (124¾) put him down again and with just two seconds of the round left he was counted out.
On becoming Moore’s number-one contender, following his defeat of France’s European champion, Gracieux Lamperti (w rsc 6 in Paris, France on 18 September 1961), it was expected that the champion’s next defence would be against Rafiu King. Turning down his challenge, as well as one from Sugar Ramos, Moore settled for a return against Kazuo Takayama, whom he had beaten over a year earlier.
