1961-08-05 [[Gene Fullmer]] w pts 15 [[Florentino Fernandez]], The Stadium, Ogden, Utah, USA - NBA. Referee: Ken Shulsen. Scorecards: 148-140, 145-142, 143-145. In a slam-bang affair, Fullmer (159¾) just about held on to his title when meeting the hard-punching Fernandez (157¼) blow for blow. Having made an excellent start, Fullmer gained a fair lead but when Fernandez started to catch him with left hooks, especially to the body, in the latter rounds he was forced to fight for his life. The 14th was Fernandez’s best round and the champion was forced to sustain a real battering before hanging on in the final session. Afterwards it was learnt that Fullmer had broken a bone in his right elbow in the penultimate round when fending off terrific left hooks.
