1962-04-21 Carlos Ortiz w pts 15 Joe Brown, Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WORLD. Referee: Frankie Van. Scorecards: 74-60, 74-58, 74-66. The champion’s title reign came to an end as he was outclassed and beaten in every department by a much younger man, while looking very much a 35-year-old who had finally run out of time. Ramming in left jab after left jab and keeping right on top of his rival, Ortiz (134¾) cut Brown (134¾) over the left eye in the opening session and was one step of the latter throughout. Dumped on the seat of his pants in the 12th, Brown was almost through but somehow he kept going to make it to the final bell and the crowning of a new champion. Having promised to be a busy champion, Ortiz promptly remained inactive for close on four months before taking a trip to the Far East, where he met Arthur Persley and Kazuo Takayama in non-title bouts. At the end of September it was announced that he would be defending his title against Teruo Kosaka, who had recently lost his Orient title to Flash Elorde.
