1962-05-04 Eder Jofre w rsc 10 (15) Herman Marques, Cow Palace, San Francisco, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: Fred Apostoli. Despite putting up a great fight and being ahead on points coming into the tenth round, with Jofre (117¾) having had no real answer to his accurate jabs, Marques (118) decided to go for a quick win and came unstuck. In the tenth, Marques tried to follow up his early successes but was exposed when a left-right had him down for eight. On rising, the challenger was immediately floored again and with 45 seconds of the session remaining the referee called it off.
Following his defeat of Marques, Jofre signed up to meet the number-one rated Joe Medel. Although losing 17 of 73 contests since turning pro in 1955, and despite being knocked out inside ten rounds by Jofre in an eliminator in 1960, Medel was the Mexican and North American champion, having beaten Ignacio Pina and Marques, respectively. An all-action, hard-hitting fighter, he had also defeated Dwight Hawkins, Mario De Leon, Jose Toluco Lopez (twice), Danny Kid, Eloy Sanchez, Manny Elias, Mitsunori Seki and Sadao Yaoita.
