1962-09-25 Sonny Liston w co 1 (15) Floyd Patterson, Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois, USA - WORLD. Frank Sikora. This was a fight that the champion clearly did not want and after a slow start followed by some fairly heavy punches that saw him backing off fast he caught Liston (214) with a right-hander to the head that had no effect on the ‘Bad Man’ of boxing whatsoever. Before Patterson (189) had time to think, Liston had slammed in a left hook, followed by a terrific right and another left, and he was down with no way of getting up, the referee completing the count with 54 seconds still left of the opening session.

Billed as an official eliminator over ten rounds, Cassius Clay, later to be known as Muhammad Ali, stopped Henry Cooper in the fifth round of their meeting at the Empire Stadium, Wembley, London, England on 18 June 1963.
