1962-10-20 Denny Moyer w pts 15 Joey Giambra, Memorial Coliseum, Portland, Oregon, USA - WBA. Referee: Sonny Liston. Scorecards: 149-144, 148-146, 146-144. Getting off to an early lead, Moyer sent out the left jab for several rounds until Giambra came into the fight in the fifth and pushed on until the ninth saw the tide turn in the youngster’s favour. As Giambra tired so Moyer came on strong, and although the 31-year-old veteran rallied in the 11th from there on in it was the latter who took control through to the final bell.
As the WBA’s inaugural championship fight at the weight it raised little excitement in America, or anywhere else for that matter, and it remained to be seen whether the new weight class would come into fashion.
As the reigning Hawaii welter champion, Stan Harrington, who had won 42 of his 53 contests, would be Moyer’s next challenger. Harrington had been a pro since 1953 and had beaten Henry Davis, Carlos Chavez, L. C. Morgan (twice), Rocky Kalingo (three times), Chico Vejar, Joe Miceli, Tony Dupas, Charley Tombstone Smith, Paddy DeMarco, Larry Baker and Charley Scott, and was a tough, wily campaigner with a hard dig.
