1963-03-21 Roberto Cruz w co 1 (15) Battling Torres, Dodgers’ Stadium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Lee Grossman. Contesting the title left vacant following the retirement of Duilio Loi, Cruz (138¼) didn’t waste much time when racing out of his corner to knock Torres (140) down with a solid right hand to the jaw. Although the Mexican got to his feet, he was dropped twice more by vicious left hooks before being hammered to the floor again and counted out after just 2.07 of the opening round. In 18 earlier recorded bouts, Cruz had failed to show that he was a future world beater, knocking out just three opponents, while losing six, including a kayo defeat at the hands of Shigemasa Kawakami and two points losses to Solomon Boysaw.
