1963-07-13 Sugar Ramos w pts 15 Rafiu King, City Bullring, Mexico City, Mexico - WORLD. Referee: Ramon Berumen. Scorecards: 10-2, 7-2, 11-1. After almost losing his title on the scales, Ramos (126) then had to overcome damage to both of his hands, the right in the third and the left in the seventh, before taking a unanimous decision over the dangerous King (124¾), who pushed him all the way in a grimly-fought contest. While there were no knockdowns, having had King in some difficulty in the sixth Ramos himself had to hang on in the 12th as the Nigerian gave it his best shot.
As the reigning Orient and Pacific featherweight champion, and The Ring magazine’s number-one contender, Mitsunori Seki would be Ramos’ next challenger. Since an unsuccessful crack at the world flyweight title, the smart southpaw had stepped up a couple of divisions, beating the likes of Ronnie Jones, Tanny Campo, Jet Bally and Kang-Il Suh along the way.
