1963-10-29 Eddie Cotton w pts 15 Henry Hank, IMA Auditorium, Flint, Michigan, USA - MICHIGAN. Referee: Jack Stein. Scorecards: 146-140, 148-147, 146-140. Fighting for the vacant Michigan version of the title, Cotton (172½) used his longer reach to keep Hank (175) continually at bay when stabbing out the left jab. Hank, a heavy hitter, seemed to have no answer to the punch as every time he got set, he found himself unbalanced by the jab. There were no knockdowns, although Cotton, who finished with a cut left eye, was shaken up a couple of times. While Cotton concentrated on the jab his rights to the body were also effective and despite a late charge by Hank the veteran just about deserved the win.
Under Michigan rules, this contest had break of 90 seconds instead of the normal 60 between rounds. Cotton forfeited Michigan recognition after a ten-rounds split decision defeat at the hands of Johnny Persol at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 21 February 1964.
