1963-12-02 Sandro Mazzinghi w rsc 13 (15) Ralph Dupas, The Stadium, Sydney, Australia - WBA. Referee: Vic Patrick. Fighting bravely, although outgunned, the challenger made life difficult for Mazzinghi (153) for a few rounds, scoring heavily in the sixth when cutting the latter over the left eye, but by the ninth he was tiring badly. Having shown excellent ring craft against his hard-punching opponent to get so far, Dupas (150¼) was not yet beaten and he hung on bravely into the 13th. However, after being smashed to the canvas three times in that session, it became clear that Dupas was through for the night and he was rescued by the referee on the 1.20 mark, with Mazzinghi still full of fight.
Forced out of action due to a car accident in which his wife was killed, Mazzinghi, given an extension to his title defence every six-month clause, got back into training in March 1964.
On 3 October at the Sports Palace, Genoa, Italy, Mazzinghi knocked out America’s Tony Montano inside 12 rounds of a fight that had been advertised for the WBA championship. Unfortunately, Montano weighed in two and a half pounds over the weight and although the contest went ahead the title was not involved and the American could not have become the champion even if he had won.
