1963-12-07 Joey Giardello w pts 15 Dick Tiger, Convention Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WORLD. Referee: Paul Cavalier. Scorecard: 8-5. Using hit-and-run tactics, Giardello (158), a huge underdog, led the champion on a merry old dance for much of the fight, using his speed and boxing ability to get him home. Only in the sixth and tenth rounds did Tiger (159) hurt Giardello badly, and although it looked as though the latter might be on the way out on both occasions he somehow weathered the storm. At the finish Giardello said: "I paced the fight my way, slow at the start, faster in the middle, then kept out of trouble at the end. To go in and fight it out with Tiger would have been suicidal. The only thing that surprised me was the referee not giving me 11 rounds instead of eight".
In July 1964, the NYSAC threatened to strip Giardello unless he signed to meet a leading contender within 20 days. Mindful of the consequences, he agreed to defend his title against the number-two contender, Rubin Carter, in Nevada on 23 October, before it was eventually transferred to another State when the promoter failed to make good the guarantees.
