1964-01-04 Eddie Perkins w rsc 13 (15) Yoshinori Takahashi, Kuramae Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Nicholas Pope. Showing good form from the start the champion was soon scoring well with solid jabs and hooks to head and body as Takahashi (139¼) looked for a way into the fight. It was soon clear that Takahashi was no real match for Perkins (138¼) and apart from the fourth round, which two judges thought he won, he was kept at arm's length. For round after round, Perkins was in control without really going for the kayo win, but in the 13th he staggered Takahashi with a right to the jaw before unloading barrages of blows to drop him. Somehow getting up at ‘nine’, Takahashi was soon under attack and taking an unmerciful beating until going down again and being rescued by the referee on the 1.35 mark.
Ranked as the number-four lightweight by The Ring magazine, Bunny Grant would be Perkins’ next challenger. In a career that started in 1958, Grant had put together 33 wins from 39 contests and numbered Lauro Salas, Percy Hayles, Gerald Gray, Tito Marshall, Angel Robinson Garcia, Dave Charnley and Doug Vaillant among his victims.
