1964-06-12 Emile Griffith w pts 15 Luis Rodriguez, Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WORLD. Referee: Harry Krause. Scorecards: 69-67, 70-68, 70-71. Meeting for the fourth time, once again there was little to separate Griffith (146) and Rodriguez (146½), but this time the latter went toe-to-toe with the champion when trying to influence the judges. As in their previous contests there were no knockdowns and the score would have been closer still had Rodriguez not had a point deducted for low blows in the third round. Again Griffith punched the harder and was more precise, but many of the sessions were ragged and bitterly contested as both looked to gain supremacy. Although cut over the left eye in the second and having struggled to make the weight, Rodriguez did not let it hamper him and was always looking for a fight as fortunes swayed one way and then the other. Griffith was also fortunate not to have points taken away for fighting after the bell on the odd occasion.
Ranked number three by The Ring magazine, Brian Curvis, the British and British Empire welterweight champion, would be Griffith’s next challenger. A solid punching southpaw, Curvis had won 31 of 32 contests and had beaten George Barnes, Wally Swift (twice), Luis Folledo, Mick Leahy, Ralph Dupas and Dave Charnley, and had gained revenge over Guy Sumlin, who was responsible for his only defeat.
