1965-03-30 Jose Torres w rsc 9 (15) Willie Pastrano, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: John LoBianco. Taking command right from the start, Torres (171¼) hurt Pastrano (174½) with heavy left hooks to the head in the opening two rounds and continually bemused him with his bobbing and weaving tactics. Pastrano seemed to have no answer to the challenger’s attacks and in the sixth a left hook to the body put him down for the first time in his career. From there onwards it was just a matter of time and after damage to his left eye worsened in the eighth, Pastrano was stopped at the end of the ninth, seemingly having co-ordination problems.
Hospitalised in San Juan, Puerto Rico after suffering a pancreas ailment in August, Torres was suspended by the NYSAC and told he would not be required to make a defence for six months, dependant on medical reports. Signed off at the end of February 1966, he began training to meet either Wayne Thornton or Roger Rouse.
