1965-12-04 Flash Elorde w pts 15 Kang-Il Suh, Araneta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines - WBA/WBC. Referee: Alex Villacampa. Scorecards: 70-67, 69-68, 71-68. Making his ninth successful defence, Elorde (130) found the going tough and just about got home, especially when two point deductions made against Suh (129¾) for butting were taken into account. There were no knockdowns, but Suh came on strong to completely outclass Elorde in the final three rounds and could consider himself unlucky not have won.
In January 1966 it was reported from California that Elorde had signed up for a title defence against Ricardo Moreno on 21 February. Following that announcement the Philippines Boxing Board stated that Elorde would risk suspension if he faced Moreno or any other unrated fighter, while another report from Tokyo stated that Elorde had agreed to defend his Orient lightweight title against Paul Fujii on 25 April instead. Neither match took place and Elorde next met Ismael Laguna (w pts 10 at the Araneta Coliseum on 19 March) in what was seen to be a lightweight title eliminator before defending his Orient lightweight title against Yoshiaki Numata, a contest he lost on points over 12 rounds (at the Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo) on 9 June 1966.
At this stage he had been allowed a relaxation to his defence every six-month clause, but following his loss to Numata he was asked once again to make a defence of his 130lbs title before thinking about challenging Carlos Ortiz for the lightweight crown. Once again a contest against Moreno was mooted before it was suggested that he meet Numata again, this time at 130lbs. Again, neither match happened and Elorde took on Jamaica’s Percy Hayles (w pts 10 at the Araneta Coliseum on 7 August) at 136lbs before signing up to defend against Vicente Derado ,with the promise of a return for the lightweight title against Ortiz if successful.
