Having made a great start, the southpaw Takayama (111¾) was gradually pegged back as both men tried to sustain the initiative and by the seventh round Accavallo (110¾) was making the running, attacking to both head and body. There were no knockdowns, although the tiring Takayama did well to last the distance as Accavallo punished him badly towards the end to land the vacant title.
