1966-07-13 Emile Griffith w pts 15 Joey Archer, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: John LoBianco. Scorecards: 8-7, 9-5, 7-7. Starting quickly, the champion was soon in action with the left hook, showing up well and in the fifth round when he buckled Archer’s knees with such a punch. Cut over the left eye following a clash of heads in the eighth, Archer (159½) became more aggressive and in three of the last six rounds he did well, stabbing in left jabs to head and body and slamming in blows at every opportunity. Despite Griffith (152) boxing at his best at the finish Archer thought he had won, and it was certainly close enough for him to be granted an immediate return.
