1966-11-28 Carlos Ortiz w co 14 (15) Flash Elorde, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Jimmy Devlin. For 13 soporific rounds Ortiz (135) seemed content to allow the slow-moving southpaw challenger to paw away with the jab while he remained in control without having to go through the gears. Prior to the 14th, Ortiz used sharp lefts and rights to soften Elorde (134½) up as he belted him to the ropes, while maintaining a pace that suited him after experiencing weight-making problems yet again. However, the 14th saw a change of tactics as Ortiz came out with a view to finishing the fight and after chasing Elorde down a cracking left hook to the jaw saw the latter counted out with 59 seconds of the session left. Now the fight was over, Ortiz was forced to think seriously about the return against Sugar Ramos, which had been demanded by the WBC, as there was now added pressure from the WBA. With both men remaining inactive in 1967, negotiations got underway to close the deal, the biggest problem being the return contract that Bill Daly, Ortiz’s manager, had signed with the Mexican promoter before leaving Mexico immediately after the Ortiz v Ramos fiasco. However, it took some time, especially with Ramos talking of retirement and Ortiz undecided as to whether he would move up a weight class, before a deal was brokered for a change of venue.
