1966-12-07 Charley Shipes w rsc 10 (15) Percy Manning, High School Gym, Hayward, California, USA - CALIFORNIA. Referee: Vern Bybee. In a contest that would decide the Californian version of the world title, Shipes (146) started well with the left jab before moving to the body with solid right hands in the eighth and beginning to make his domination count. In the tenth round, Manning (146), staggered badly from a two-handed onslaught and forced to take a standing ‘eight’ count, was then dropped by a left to the body. At that point, with Shipes ahead on all cards, the referee moved in to stop the fight with just one second of the round remaining.
