1966-12-10 Horacio Accavallo w pts 15 Efren Torres, Luna Park Stadium, Buenos Aires, Argentina - WBA. Referee: Juan Barbe. Scorecards: 297-294, 297-294, 298-293. A hard-fought battle saw both men cut, giving and taking in large measures, with Accavallo (111½) proving the more adaptable of the two. Having failed to score an early kayo, Torres (111¾) slowed towards the end as the champion came on strong, but ultimately survived the onslaught before going down on points.

Taking in a non-title fight on 20 February 1967 at the Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan, Accavallo was stopped in the sixth round by Kiyoshi Tanabe, who had won Japan’s first ever boxing medal, a bronze from the 1960 Olympics. Unbeaten in 22 contests, the win saw Tanabe become The Ring magazine’s number-one contender as well as gaining him a title shot at Accavallo scheduled for July. Having beaten Leo Zulueta earlier and full of confidence, Tanabe’s championship hopes were then dashed when it was discovered that he had suffered a detached retina in his right eye, an injury that forced him to retire.
