1967-12-14 Hiroshi Kobayashi w co 12 (15) Yoshiaki Numata, Kuramae Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBA/WBC. Referee: Ko Toyama. Making his first defence, Numata (129½) was taken apart by the hard-hitting Kobayashi (129) who put his man down four times in all. The first knockdown came in the sixth round from a right to the jaw, and Numata was dropped twice more from heavy rights in the 12th before being counted out on the 1.56 mark. Numata, who had taken a solid beating and was behind on all three cards, finished flat on his back, a position he was forced to endure for several minutes as the medics worked on him.

The fifth-ranked Rene Barrientos, a clever southpaw who had won 24 of 29 contests, beating Love Allotey, Kang-Il Suh and Koji Okano, would be Kobayashi’s next challenger.
