1968-04-27 Jimmy Ellis w pts 15 Jerry Quarry, The Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Elmer Costa. Scorecards: 7-6, 10-5, 6-6. In a contest to decide the vacant WBA title, as early as the second round both Ellis (197) and Quarry (195) were cut above their eyes, on the left and right respectively. However, neither cut became a factor in a fight that saw Ellis boxing on the back foot and using his extra reach to counter Quarry as he came forward. With Ellis happy to box on the outside there were no really heavy exchanges until Quarry was caught be a smashing right to the head in the seventh and the pair traded blows until the end of the session. Thereafter, Ellis was content to score with heavy right hands to the head whenever in range, but in the main he boxed in a safety first fashion without Quarry being able to influence the fight. At the final bell, the scorecards showed that had the judges credited Quarry with one more round he would have won the contest.
