1969-02-15Rene Barrientos w pts 15 Ruben Navarro, Araneta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines - WBC. Scorecards: 73-65, 74-66, 73-68. Even until the eighth round, Barrientos (129½) took over from the ninth onwards as Navarro (129½) weakened badly in this clash for the vacant WBC title. Despite Navarro slipping to the floor in the 13th, there were no knockdowns as such and Barrientos, a flashy southpaw, well warranted his victory after his body punches had taken their toll. Following this and a win over Len Kesey, Barrientos was surprisingly allowed to take on the WBA’s leading contender, Adolph Pruitt at the International Centre Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii on 29 July, in a non-title fight made at 138lbs and scheduled for ten rounds. Pruitt won when the referee was forced to stop the fight at the end of the seventh session when a bad gash over Barrientos’ right eye worsened. A see-saw affair, with both men down in the second, Barrientos was unable to get back into action until the end of the year, prior to finally signing for a defence against the former champion, Yoshiaki Numata.
