1969-02-18 Mando Ramos w rsc 11 (15) Carlos Teo Cruz, Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: John Thomas. Although confused by the champion’s crouching tactics in the earlier rounds, once Ramos (134½) got into his stride in the fifth and began to put his reach advantage to good use he began to gain in confidence. Not one for giving up lightly, Cruz (135) came on strong in the sixth and seventh with solid rights to the head hurting Ramos, but in the eighth after sustaining a severe cut over the left eye he seemed to lose all his rhythm. From there on Ramos took over with jabs and two-fisted attacks until the referee had seen enough and rescued Cruz, who was bleeding badly, at 2.41 of the 11th.
Having signed for a 14 June defence against Yoshiaki Numata, only a matter of days before the fight was due to take place Ramos broke a hand in training thus forcing it to be re-scheduled.
For Cruz it was to be his last championship contest and following a further four fights both he and his family were tragically killed in an aeroplane crash off the coast of the Dominican Republic on 15 February 1970.
