1969-03-08 Lionel Rose w pts 15 Alan Rudkin, Kooyong Tennis Courts, Melbourne, Australia - WORLD. Referee: Vic Patrick. Scorecards: 75-60, 70-63, 69-70. Despite breaking a finger and severely bruising his wrist in the eighth round, Rose (118) was rarely troubled, his brilliant counter-boxing and all-round skill keeping him out of harms way as the challenger, Rudkin (118), continually came forward. The British boy proved as game as they come and if he had possessed a heavier punch he would certainly have been in with a shout.

Rose’s next challenger would be the hard-hitting Ruben Olivares, who was unbeaten in 51 starts with only two going the distance. The match was made after Olivares stopped Takao Sakurai in the sixth round of a scheduled 12-round eliminator that was recognised by the Californian Boxing Commission at the Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California on 23 May.
