1970-02-08 Shozo Saijo w pts 15 Godfrey Stevens, Military Arts Hall, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Ken Morita. Scorecards: 74-64, 74-66, 73-66. Expected to box on the back foot, the challenger surprised many when he elected to stand in front of Saijo (125½) and trade from the opening bell. Both men were cut in the fourth, Saijo over the left eye and Stevens (124¾) on his right optic. Stevens was proving to be a tough nut to crack, despite being under pressure from attacks from both hands to head and body throughout, and regularly made the body his target as he tried to bring Saijo down. Finally, following a concerted burst of fighting, a left uppercut dropped Stevens for the mandatory ‘eight’ in the 15th, but back on his feet he was still swapping blows as the contest ended.
