1971-01-03 Yoshiaki Numata w pts 15 Rene Barrientos, Sumpu Hall, Shizuaka, Japan - WBC. Referee: John Crowder. Scorecards: 68-67, 73-71, 72-73. After experiencing difficulty making the weight Barrientos (130) lacked power, but instead of using his reach and speed to drain his challenger Numata (130) elected to go head to head early on. In what became an even match, both men were cut over the right eye in the latter rounds as first one then the other looked to dominate. It was certainly close, with the southpaw Barrientos, countering well, having a strong tenth round and Numata, noticeably not using the left lead, eventually relying on using occasional straight rights while keeping the fight at long range.
