1971-02-12 Ken Buchanan w pts 15 Ruben Navarro, Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 9-2, 9-4, 9-4. Overcoming a shaky start when he suffered a body pounding, Buchanan (134½) came back strongly with the left jab and solid rights over the top to gradually take the play away from his rival. By the sixth, Buchanan was setting Navarro (135) up with scintillating left hands and although the latter was always dangerous with his body shots and was well in the fight until the 11th at that point the champion took over. As Navarro faded, Buchanan handed him a boxing lesson and although he could not put the Mexican away there was no doubting his supremacy.
In June, Buchanan forfeited the WBC version of the title due to a contractual dispute. Having been told that he must defend against their stipulated challenger, he signed for a return against Laguna, an action which was followed by the WBC matching Pedro Carrasco, the reigning European junior welterweight champion, and the former champion, Mando Ramos, for their version of the title. Since losing his title to Ismael Laguna, Ramos had beaten Sugar Ramos, Raul Rojas and Ruben Navarro and was right up there.
A veteran of 106 contests, the 28-year-old Carrasco had avenged his only defeat at the hands of Aldo Pravisani three times over and had beaten Rene Roque (twice), Borge Krogh, Franco Brondi, Kid Tano, Olli Maki, Angel Robinson Garcia and Joe Tetteh. With a high guard, fast left jab and good movement Carrasco was strongly fancied.
